A sun at its height will inevitably set
A moon at its fullest will grow thinner…
This is a law of the universe, which exempts no human or spirit.
– Book of Changes
As one may only understand upon repeated study, Lee Si-Woo’s work reveals evidence of the artist’s struggles with several issues. Sometimes in a kind, explanatory form, like in instruction manuals; at others in the form of implicit lyrics; images the artist expresses on canvases large and small traverse the boundary between representation and abstraction while piling in multiple layers to form stories before undoing the layers to reveal its former form to then disappear, displaying an ambiguous attitude. If one follows the visual attraction of colors so vibrant they appear ready to disintegrate, and are only possible under the burning sun of a southern country; grey-toned faces, in which an urban melancholy seeps in, intermingle with one another as if collapsing after failing to pour out their hearts’ burden, inducing curiosity. To reduce Lee’s paintings as such to a matter of technique, style or individuality alone would be analogous to defining the moon solely through physical facts.
Lee’s work is a Zen exploration and pure investigation unfettered by our scientific attempts to uncover things through observations of phenomena and numbers alone under the good name of searching for truth, contemporary society’s maxim for its members to possess individuality, and ideologies of a consumerist world expounding on the virtues of brand value. In such a process, images of thoughts Lee had visited are revealed in the forms sometimes of a fingernail moon, sometimes of an eyebrow moon and yet at other times of a jar moon. However, the fact remains that these are of a moon’s appearance. This exhibition is a pilgrimage process of the artist, Lee Si-Woo, who asks the fundamental question of “what is painting?” Just as we anticipate the story at which the artist will arrive following the innumerable remaining pieces and Lee’s imagination connecting them, the many stories to come regarding what art is through this artist’s work inspires anticipation. If painting could be “the most entertaining kind of television,” we may approach the edges, if modestly, of the answer to a question no one in history has ever seemed to have quite answered.
